We reject the erasure of African American history and culture by honoring the lives and legacies of those laid to rest in this sacred place through preservation, storytelling, education, and community-building.<\/p><cite><em><em>Friends of Geer Cemetery Mission Statement<\/em><\/em><\/cite><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The Friends of Geer Cemetery was established as a grass roots organization in 2003. In 2019, the group reorganized and we are now a 501c3 non-profit organization. Our activities include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Site cleanup<\/li><li>Restoration of headstones<\/li><li>Identification of graves<\/li><li>Researching and reporting on the histories of those buried here<\/li><li>Actively involving descendants of those buried here in our work and with each other<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/friendsofgeercemetery.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/clipart2839927.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-962\" width=\"283\" height=\"283\" srcset=\"https:\/\/friendsofgeercemetery.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/clipart2839927.png 400w, https:\/\/friendsofgeercemetery.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/clipart2839927-300x300.png 300w, https:\/\/friendsofgeercemetery.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/clipart2839927-150x150.png 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 283px) 100vw, 283px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-normal-font-size\">Sankofa is a word in the Akan Twi and Fanti languages of Ghana. The word translates to \u201cretrieve\u201d or \u201cgo back and get it.\u201d It signifies the need to learn from the past in order to prepare for what is to come. The meaning reinforces the inborn idea that community and family should respect and reclaim stories of the past.
