Tailors were much in demand in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. For those in the middle- and lower-income brackets, a good tailor could repair, update, or resize clothing that might otherwise have to be replaced.2<\/a><\/sup>“Fashion Makers,” Fashioning Philadelphia, (Philadelphia, PA: The Library Company of Philadelphia, 2018). https:\/\/librarycompany.org\/fashioning\/section4.html<\/a> : accessed 17 Oct 2021.<\/span> Still, how did Durham end up with three tailors, all named J. Allen, all working in the nineteen-teens? Two of them (James H. and James A.) were business partners in Allen & Allen, yet despite the obvious similarity of their names, we have no hard evidence of the blood relations between them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

John Hubert Allen (1876\u20131923)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

John Hubert Allen, the oldest of the three, was born in 1876 to James Y. The first record we have of John Hubert is from 1903 and shows him living in Durham and working as a porter for W. A. Slater clothiers.5<\/a><\/sup>Durham, N.C. Parrish\u2014we know this was the address in 1907). With help from Nannie, he kept the business going until 1922 or so, when he hired Leslie Samuel as a second tailor for the shop.7<\/a><\/sup>Durham, N.C. James Hubert Allen (1894\u20131964)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

James Hubert’s mother, Frances “Nannie” Allen, was the daughter of Richard Allen (b. 1846) and Adeline Latta.9<\/a><\/sup>“United States Census, 1870,” database with images, FamilySearch (https:\/\/familysearch.org\/ark:\/61903\/3:1:S3HY-66P2?cc=1438024&wc=KL3Y-T38%3A518653801%2C519061801%2C519063901<\/a> : 14 June 2019), North Carolina > Granville > Dutchville > image 27 of 44; citing NARA microfilm publication M593 (Washington, D.C.: National Archives and Records Administration, n.d.).<\/span> The Latta family is one link between the three tailors; see “The Latta Connection” below.) Hubert Allen, was partners with James Albert Allen in the Allen & Allen tailoring business.11<\/a><\/sup>Durham, N.C. Johnson and partnering with Johnson H. Ray in the Ray & Allen funeral home.14<\/a><\/sup>Fish business: Durham, N.C. Funeral home: Hill Directory Co.’s (Incorporated) Durham, N.C. City Directory 1925 <\/em>(Durham, N.C.: Hill Directory Company, 1925) p.425, Ray surname; digital image, “North Carolina City Directories,” DigitalNC (https:\/\/lib.digitalnc.org\/record\/25116<\/a> : accessed 5 May 2021).<\/span> His name features in 19 different property transactions between 1916 and 1960. Between 1920 and 1922 he married Elizabeth Jackson (1900\u20131959), daughter of George Jackson and Fannie Evans.15<\/a><\/sup>James Hubert appears to be single in a deed from 1920 (book 60, page 45), and his wife is mentioned in a deed from 1922 (book 63, page 252).<\/span> If they had any children, we found no record of them. He seems to be the most aggressive businessman of three, and also the most creative: he styled himself “J. Hubert Allen” and made a point that their dry cleaning was “French.” As Allen & Allen increasingly focused on dry cleaning, he started his own separate tailoring business, which even had a telephone.17<\/a><\/sup>Durham, N.C. James Albert Allen (1889\u20131966)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Frances “Fannie” Latta<\/a> was James Albert Allen’s mother. We know nothing so far about his father except his name: William Allen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The first record we’ve found shows James A. in Durham in 1911, aged 22, where he started in the tailoring business as the partner of John R. Hickson in Hickson & Allen, located at 108 1\/2 S. Corcoran. His home address was 111 N. Roxboro.19<\/a><\/sup>Durham, N.C. Directory 1913-1914 <\/em>p. 42. Note that the directory (incorrectly?) identifies John H. rather than James H. as James A.’s partner.<\/span> On Christmas Day of 1913, he married Nellie L. James, who went by “Jim,” and Nellie had no children of their own, but must have had a strong desire for family. The 1930 census shows them with five adopted children: Leon (later Leo, b. 1918), Vida (later Violet, b. 1919), Clarence (b. 1921), Andra (b. 1921), and Dannie (aka Daniel, b. 1922). Washington, D.C.: National Archives and Records Administration, 2012.<\/span> We assume they had a common set of birth parents, belonging to a branch of the Allen or Latta family living in the Northeast. Jim’s mother Frances Latta Allen also lived with him and Nellie throughout the 1930s.24<\/a><\/sup>Various Durham City Directories for the period.<\/span> Since this was the period of the Great Depression, and Jim’s business seemed to be doing well, he may have felt even more inclined to generosity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Fourth Tailor<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The youngest of Jim Allen’s adopted children, Daniel R. Allen, was born in 1922 (or maybe 1924).25<\/a><\/sup>First date is from the 1930 U. S. Census; second date is from the 1940 U. S. Census.<\/span> By 1947 he had joined Allen & Allen as a tailor, and remained there for the life of the business.26<\/a><\/sup>Various Durham City Directories for the period.<\/span> Sometime between 1940 and 1947, he married a woman named Vera.27<\/a><\/sup>Hill’s Durham (Durham County, N.C.) Daniel was shown working for the “One Stop Martin Shop” at 518 Larchwood, possibly an attempt to capitalize on the fame of the “One-Hour Martinizing” dry-cleaning chain. J. Hubert was listed with no profession specified, and James A. was not listed at all.29<\/a><\/sup>Hill’s Durham (Durham County, N.C.) The Latta Connection<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Geer, next door to the Lattas at 109 W. Lucy Latta (1848\u20131911, buried in Geer Cemetery), holds at least one piece of the puzzle. Here’s her life story<\/a>. Her son Ernest Latta (b. 1887 or 1890) went to work as a porter for J. H. Allen in 1907.34<\/a><\/sup>Durham, N.C.
