The emphasis was on the Bible and the reading and memorization of verses, and they made an effort to recruit rural children like Bun. But it was Saturday night and Bun was headed for downtown Durham. Not to carouse, however\u2014Bun was widely known as a man who never touched alcohol, possibly a legacy from his days at the Mary Potter School.<sup class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote modern-footnotes-footnote--hover-on-desktop \" data-mfn=\"10\" data-mfn-post-scope=\"0000000000000bf90000000000000000_1645\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-describedby=\"mfn-content-0000000000000bf90000000000000000_1645-10\">10<\/a><\/sup><span id=\"mfn-content-0000000000000bf90000000000000000_1645-10\" role=\"tooltip\" class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote__note\" tabindex=\"0\" data-mfn=\"10\">&#8220;Freight Train Killed Negro,&#8221; <em>Durham Morning Herald Sun<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At 7:30 p.m. a woman who lived nearby saw him walking westward along the railroad tracks. She turned away and moments later heard the scream of a train&#8217;s brakes.
