By the age of only 10, Cager was working as a farm laborer nine months of the year alongside his father, while doing some schooling for the remaining three months.<sup class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote modern-footnotes-footnote--hover-on-desktop \" data-mfn=\"6\" data-mfn-post-scope=\"0000000000000bf90000000000000000_2133\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-describedby=\"mfn-content-0000000000000bf90000000000000000_2133-6\">6<\/a><\/sup><span id=\"mfn-content-0000000000000bf90000000000000000_2133-6\" role=\"tooltip\" class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote__note\" tabindex=\"0\" data-mfn=\"6\">1900 US Census Oak Hill.<\/span> In the early 1900\u2019s, the family likely started looking at Durham for its better economic opportunities compared with rural tenant farming in Granville County. Reynolds, it also indicates he had contracted his fatal disease a few weeks earlier in Detroit, Michigan.
