The 1889 City Directory lists Delia as a \u201csack maker,\u201d crafting the muslin bags that loose tobacco, like Bull Durham, was sold in.<sup class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote modern-footnotes-footnote--hover-on-desktop \" data-mfn=\"8\" data-mfn-post-scope=\"0000000000000bf90000000000000000_2236\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-describedby=\"mfn-content-0000000000000bf90000000000000000_2236-8\">8<\/a><\/sup><span id=\"mfn-content-0000000000000bf90000000000000000_2236-8\" role=\"tooltip\" class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote__note\" tabindex=\"0\" data-mfn=\"8\">Turner &amp; Co.&#8217;s Durham Directory for the Years 1889 and 1890 (Durham, NC: E.F. Turner &amp; Co., 1889) p. 111, Jenkins surname; digital image, &#8220;North Carolina City Directories,&#8221; DigitalNC (<a href=\"https:\/\/lib.digitalnc.org\/record\/25129\">https:\/\/lib.digitalnc.org\/record\/25129<\/a> : accessed 13 Oct 2022).<\/span> Willie died in 1893 while at work.<sup class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote modern-footnotes-footnote--hover-on-desktop \" data-mfn=\"9\" data-mfn-post-scope=\"0000000000000bf90000000000000000_2236\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-describedby=\"mfn-content-0000000000000bf90000000000000000_2236-9\">9<\/a><\/sup><span id=\"mfn-content-0000000000000bf90000000000000000_2236-9\" role=\"tooltip\" class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote__note\" tabindex=\"0\" data-mfn=\"9\">\u201cA Dead Negro.\u201d<\/span> Julia survived another decade, passing away sometime after 1905, the last time she was listed in the city directory. Where they were buried is unknown, but it is possible that they rest in Geer Cemetery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It appears Washington and Delia lived apart for much of their married lives, as he can be found in city directories for 1897 and 1902 and in the 1900 census living apart from the family, who was still on Chapel Hill Road.<sup class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote modern-footnotes-footnote--hover-on-desktop \" data-mfn=\"10\" data-mfn-post-scope=\"0000000000000bf90000000000000000_2236\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-describedby=\"mfn-content-0000000000000bf90000000000000000_2236-10\">10<\/a><\/sup><span id=\"mfn-content-0000000000000bf90000000000000000_2236-10\" role=\"tooltip\" class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote__note\" tabindex=\"0\" data-mfn=\"10\"><a>1900 US Census Durham, and various Durham city directories.<\/a><\/span> However, we do know they remained legally married from a 1904 property deed, where they are listed as heirs of property likely passed down from Delia\u2019s father.<sup class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote modern-footnotes-footnote--hover-on-desktop \" data-mfn=\"11\" data-mfn-post-scope=\"0000000000000bf90000000000000000_2236\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-describedby=\"mfn-content-0000000000000bf90000000000000000_2236-11\">11<\/a><\/sup><span id=\"mfn-content-0000000000000bf90000000000000000_2236-11\" role=\"tooltip\" class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote__note\" tabindex=\"0\" data-mfn=\"11\">Register of Deeds, Durham County, NC. <a href=\"https:\/\/rodweb.dconc.gov\/web\/search\/DOCSEARCH5S1\">https:\/\/rodweb.dconc.gov\/web\/search\/DOCSEARCH5S1<\/a>.
