Others we know through death certificates that tell only a small part of their stories. One such individual is Issum Bennett (a.k.a. Isom or Isham).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His death certificate reports him to have been an amazing 119 years old at his death in 1917, with a birth date in the eighteenth century.<sup class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote modern-footnotes-footnote--hover-on-desktop \" data-mfn=\"1\" data-mfn-post-scope=\"0000000000000bf90000000000000000_2652\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-describedby=\"mfn-content-0000000000000bf90000000000000000_2652-1\">1<\/a><\/sup><span id=\"mfn-content-0000000000000bf90000000000000000_2652-1\" role=\"tooltip\" class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote__note\" tabindex=\"0\" data-mfn=\"1\">Issum Bennett death certificate: Ancestry.com.&nbsp;<em>North Carolina, U.S., Death Certificates, 1909-1976<\/em>&nbsp;[database on-line]. By the 1900 census, Issum and his wife had moved east near Cokesville in Vance County, with the census indicating that only five of the couple\u2019s children were still living at this time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of their sons, Edward Bennett, had moved with his family to Durham NC as early as 1897, likely looking for better economic opportunities than those available through rural tenant farming in Granville and Vance counties.<sup class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote modern-footnotes-footnote--hover-on-desktop \" data-mfn=\"6\" data-mfn-post-scope=\"0000000000000bf90000000000000000_2652\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-describedby=\"mfn-content-0000000000000bf90000000000000000_2652-6\">6<\/a><\/sup><span id=\"mfn-content-0000000000000bf90000000000000000_2652-6\" role=\"tooltip\" class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote__note\" tabindex=\"0\" data-mfn=\"6\">Year: 1900; Census Place: Durham, Durham, North Carolina; Roll: 1193; Page: 26; Enumeration District: 0031; FHL microfilm: 1241193. He first rented in the Brookstown neighborhood on the west side of Durham, and subsequently lived alongside his son Edward in the vibrant Hayti district.<sup class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote modern-footnotes-footnote--hover-on-desktop \" data-mfn=\"10\" data-mfn-post-scope=\"0000000000000bf90000000000000000_2652\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-describedby=\"mfn-content-0000000000000bf90000000000000000_2652-10\">10<\/a><\/sup><span id=\"mfn-content-0000000000000bf90000000000000000_2652-10\" role=\"tooltip\" class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote__note\" tabindex=\"0\" data-mfn=\"10\">Durham City Directories from 1902 through 1917.<\/span> Rose died sometime between 1905 and the 1910 census, leaving Issum a widower.<sup class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote modern-footnotes-footnote--hover-on-desktop \" data-mfn=\"11\" data-mfn-post-scope=\"0000000000000bf90000000000000000_2652\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-describedby=\"mfn-content-0000000000000bf90000000000000000_2652-11\">11<\/a><\/sup><span id=\"mfn-content-0000000000000bf90000000000000000_2652-11\" role=\"tooltip\" class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote__note\" tabindex=\"0\" data-mfn=\"11\">1910 US Census Durham 22B.<\/span> Rose is possibly buried in Geer Cemetery, but unfortunately this can\u2019t be confirmed as death certificates were not required until 1913, and no other corroborating information on her death could be found.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sadly, even as a man of 80 or 90, Issum is still listed in city directories working as a laborer, which speaks to the lack of societal care for the elderly available in the working class African American community at the time. He is listed in the 1910 census in Durham alongside his widowed daughter Mary (a.k.a. Mollie) and her eight-year-old daughter Leana.<sup class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote modern-footnotes-footnote--hover-on-desktop \" data-mfn=\"12\" data-mfn-post-scope=\"0000000000000bf90000000000000000_2652\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-describedby=\"mfn-content-0000000000000bf90000000000000000_2652-12\">12<\/a><\/sup><span id=\"mfn-content-0000000000000bf90000000000000000_2652-12\" role=\"tooltip\" class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote__note\" tabindex=\"0\" data-mfn=\"12\">1910 US Census Durham 22B.<\/span> Issum died in 1917 from old age and heart trouble, and was buried in Geer Cemetery, possibly alongside his wife Rose.<sup class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote modern-footnotes-footnote--hover-on-desktop \" data-mfn=\"13\" data-mfn-post-scope=\"0000000000000bf90000000000000000_2652\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-describedby=\"mfn-content-0000000000000bf90000000000000000_2652-13\">13<\/a><\/sup><span id=\"mfn-content-0000000000000bf90000000000000000_2652-13\" role=\"tooltip\" class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote__note\" tabindex=\"0\" data-mfn=\"13\">1910 US Census Durham 22B.<\/span> We know at least three of his many grandchildren are also buried in Geer Cemetery, all of them children of Edward: a stillborn daughter (1911), and sons Clarence (b. 1890) and Venis (1916\u20131916).<sup class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote modern-footnotes-footnote--hover-on-desktop \" data-mfn=\"14\" data-mfn-post-scope=\"0000000000000bf90000000000000000_2652\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-describedby=\"mfn-content-0000000000000bf90000000000000000_2652-14\">14<\/a><\/sup><span id=\"mfn-content-0000000000000bf90000000000000000_2652-14\" role=\"tooltip\" class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote__note\" tabindex=\"0\" data-mfn=\"14\">Clarence Bennett death certificate: Ancestry.com.
