Her father first appears in Durham city directories in 1905, where he found work as a porter at the Citizens Bank on Main Street and then at a fish stall in the downtown City Market (located on the site occupied today by the Durham Armory).5Durham city directories 1905–1911.

The family lived for a few years on Mobile Avenue in the Hayti district, and then settled on adjacent Proctor Street.6Durham city directories 1905–1911.

In her only census record (1910), we find Hallie attending school, likely the Whitted School.71910 US Census Durham: Ancestry.com. 1910 United States Federal Census [database on-line]. Unfortunately, Hallie died at the age of only 16 from influenza and associated pneumonia on 18 February 1919 and was buried in Geer Cemetery, the only member of her family we know to be buried there.10Hallie Meadows death certificate: Ancestry.com. Hers was not a unique story, with over fifteen deaths from influenza recorded among those buried in Geer in the winter of 1918-1919 alone, an epidemic that took the young and old alike.11Friends of Geer Cemetery, internal database.  She was still listed among the graduates of the Whitted School in May of 1919, apparently being given the honor posthumously.12“Colored School in Commencement.”

Grant lived in Petersburg until his death in 1942, employed as a laborer in the tobacco industry, an assistant at a funeral home, and finally as an attendant at the Central State Hospital (a.k.a. Psychiatric Hospital), where he himself spent the last year and a half of his life.13Jobs: Petersburg VA city directories.

Blanche was an active member of White Rock Baptist Church, which we might guess the family attended during Hallie’s life as well, it being only a few doors away from where she spent her too short life in Hayti.18White Rock: “Mrs. Blanche B. Meadows.” Written on her headstone is a sentiment that was undoubtedly shared by those family, neighbors and church members who knew her: “Gone so soon.”
