CADLETT, MARY – Friends of Geer Cemetery

We don’t know much about Mary Cadlett’s everyday life or personality, but we can reconstruct much of her family tree and trace many of her descendants, as well as put important aspects of her life into context.

Mary Cadlett was born into slavery around 1844.¹ Her maiden name was Mary Jeffies and her parents were Mary Jeffies and MC Jeffies of Franklinton, NC.² She married a fellow enslaved person, Louis Cadlett (b. ~1830), in 1860, and their union was legally recognized in 1866, after Emancipation.³ Louis spent his life as a farmer in rural Franklin, Granville, and Moore counties.⁴ He and Mary had at least 13 children, and Mary was a full-time housewife.⁵

Sometime around 1900, probably after Louis’s death, Mary moved to Durham. She was one of the first in her family to relocate to the city. Between 1903 and 1909, her sons Mack and Ira were both living in Durham, and Mack was most likely the informant on her death certificate (“M. C. Cadlett”).⁶ In addition, an Anne or Annie Catlett, who may have been the wife of Mary’s son Dudley, is also listed in the Durham City Directory beginning in 1909.⁷ Mary died on 30 December 1909 (approximately 65 years old) of “old age,” and was buried at Geer Cemetery the following day.⁸ Unfortunately, her headstone has not been discovered to date.

Mary Cadlett left a significant human legacy. In addition to raising her own 13 children, she had 45 grandchildren that we know of (not counting step-grandchildren) and dozens of great-grandchildren. Her descendants’ geographical closeness mirrored their emotional ties and their willingness to take each other in when times were hard.

Note that there are a number of variant spellings of Mary’s last name (most often Cadlett), but as recordkeeping became better, her descendants seemed to settle on “Catlett” as the definitive spelling of the family name. In most cases we have used the spelling that was given in the associated historical document.

Henry Catlett and descendants

Henry Catlett, Mary and Louis’s oldest son, never seems to have strayed far from Franklin County. Born in 1858, we first find him in the 1870 Federal Census in Brassfields Township of Granville Country, NC.⁹ By the 1880 census he was in Franklinton Township, and he married Chaney Perry there on 3 June 1886.¹⁰ Their daughter Bettie Catlett Avent, born 17 May 1890, died 21 July 1971 and was buried in Franklin County four days later.

This is all the information we’ve found so far on Henry’s family.

Profus Cadlett

Profus Catlett was born about 1861.¹¹ He is listed in the 1880 Federal Census for Franklinton NC as “Protheus Cattell,” and then seems to disappear.¹² The only trace we can find is his namesake nephew, son of his younger brother Mack.

Ferdy Cadlett

Ferdy Cadlett was born about 1863. Her first name is listed on the 1870 Federal Census as Ferreby, and on the 1880 census as Ferdy.¹³ As with her brother Profus, she seems to disappear after that.

Maria Cadlett and descendants

Maria Cadlett, whose first name was often spelled Mariah, was born about 1865 in Franklinton.¹⁴ Like her brothers and sisters, she grew up on family farms in rural North Carolina. She married Calvin Grissom (age 28) on 10 May 1889 in Granville–probably in Brassfield, where Calvin lived.¹⁵ Undoubtedly Calvin is related to Cannon Grissom, who would marry Maria’s sister Mary in 1910, and also possibly related to the Anne Grissom who would marry Maria’s brother Dudley in 1892. We are still trying to figure out how these various Grissoms are related.

Calvin and Maria had at least three children. Matthew Grissom was born in 1892 and was working as a laborer when he died of tuberculosis on 2 September 1925.¹⁶ Matthew was married to Nannie Mann (b. about 1888) on 12 February 1921 in Granville County.¹⁷ His draft card from 1917shows that he claimed physical disability, though the disability was not specified.¹⁸

Jay G. Grissom (spelled “Jagoole” on his death certificate) was born in 1894 and was working as a sweeper in a tobacco factory when he died of tuberculosis in 1914.¹⁹ Diseases of the lungs were common at this time, but even more common than usual among Mary Cadlett’s descendants.²⁰ As for the name “Jagoole,” see also “Jagoul” Catlett, a.k.a. Gabe, son of Joe and Leola Catlett. The name may have an Italian origin; there’s a reference to “jadrool” in the song “Mambo Italiano” from the 1950s.²¹

We found very little information about Eola (or Ella) Grissom. She was born in 1895 or 1896, and was still living with her mother at the age of 16.²² After that, she seems to disappear.

Dudley Catlett and descendants

Mary and Louis’s son Dudley was born about 1867 in Granville County.²³ Like so many in his family, he worked as a farmer all his life.²⁴

He married Georgianah (known as Anna) Grissom (1870–25 July 1923), daughter of George Hatch and Martha Perry Hatch, on 13 December 1892 in Brassfield.²⁵ Anna was previously married to J. E. Grissom, son of Willis and Cary Grissom—almost certainly related to the other Grissoms that married into the Catlett family, though we haven’t found supporting evidence yet.²⁶

Anna brought one child, Mamie (b. 1891), from her first marriage. She and Dudley went on to have four of their own: Edward Coy (1898–25 February 1933), Ethel Mildred (b. 1902), Nettie (b. 1906), and Lillie M. (b. 1909).²⁷ Stepdaughter Mamie married Almus Daniel (b. 1880) around 1906, and the Daniels took in Anna and her children after Dudley died (in 1908 or 1909).²⁸ On 22 December 1913, Anna married a final time, to B. G. Morgan (b. 1873), and was still married to him when she died in 1923.²⁹

Dudley’s son Edward was clearly named for Edward Coy, who was tortured and murdered in Arkansas in 1892 after being falsely accused of raping a white woman. The brutality of the murder got national attention, including in the New York Times, and it “remained a part of public consciousness throughout the United States for many years.”³⁰ Edward Catlett married Pauline Mayo (19) on 20 April 1920.³¹ At the time of the 1930 Federal Census, Edward and Pauline’s children were Marpreska (11), Bernice (9), and James E (7).³² They were living adjacent to the George S. Catlett family, who were white. We don’t know what the relationship was between the white and Black Catletts. Edward died of influenza on 25 February 1933.³³

Bernice and her mother would end up living together in Durham in 1941 where Pauline worked as a maid.³⁴ We know this Bernice is Pauline’s daughter, as the other Bernice would only have been 9 years old at this point, and only “citizens over sixteen years of age” are listed in the City Directory.³⁵ James Edward Catlett, Dudley’s youngest son, registered for the draft on 30 June 1942, with a birthday of 17 July 1923 and no employer.³⁶ We have no further information on Bernice or James.

Ira Catlett and descendants

Mary and Louis’s son Ira was born in May 1870, though his name appears in the 1870 census as John.³⁷ By the age of 10 he was known as Ira and already working on the family farm in Franklinton.³⁸

Ira married Anna Holden on 20 November 1894 in Granville County.³⁹ They had seven children that we know of: Ila (February 1895), Nina (January 1897), Lizzie (May 1899), Mary (5 July 1901–1 July 1944), Esther (18 October 1905–20 January 1952), Otho (8 March 1909–25 August 1963) and James E. (November 1916).⁴⁰

Otho married Lula (Lou) Charity Beasley around 1925, and the couple lived with Lou’s mother, Callie, for many years.⁴¹ Otho served in World War II and was discharged on 10 August 1945.⁴² On 25 August 1963, Otho was DOA at Duke Hospital after a severe heart attack. Otho and Lou had a daughter, Darthia M. E. Catlett, who died on 18 October 1928 as a three-month-old infant. We know of no other children of this couple.

At one point in 1923, Anna, her daughters Esther, Lizzie, Mary, and Nina, and son Otho were all living together on Fayetteville St. on the corner of Dudley (1200 or 1300 block.⁴³ Esther married Henry Tucker of Durham on 18 October 1924.⁴⁴ They had at least four children: Pearl (b. 1925), Henry L (b. 1927), Anna (b. 1928), and Velva (b. 1929).⁴⁵

Lucy Catlett

Mary and Louis’s daughter Lucy was 7 years old in the 1880 Franklinton census.⁴⁶ This is the first and last mention we can find of her name.

Cora Catlett

Likewise, Cora was 6 years old in the 1880 census and we can find no further trace of her. ⁴⁷

Mack Cadlett and descendants

Mack B. Cadlett was born about 1876 in Franklinton, NC.⁴⁸ He went on to marry a woman named Lillie Jones.⁴⁹ Over the span of his life, Mack was a laborer, a gardener, and a tobacco worker.⁵⁰ At 55, Mack suddenly died of cerebral hemorrhage on 22 January 1936. He was buried at Grove Hill cemetery, a small African American cemetery in Durham, two days later.⁵¹

Mack’s wife and Mary’s daughter-in-law, Lilllie Bell Jones, was born on 15 April 1888. She died on 4 September 1955 at 67 years old, almost 20 years after her husband Mack. Lillie worked as a cook in a private home during her life. Interestingly, Lillie also died of sudden cerebral hemorrhage, just as Mack did.⁵² Unfortunately, Lillie was not buried next to Mack, rather she was buried in Beechwood cemetery with a headstone that reads OUR DEAR MOTHER.⁵³

Mack and Lillie Cadlett had at least seven children: Tommie (b. 1905), Profus (b. 1909), Mary Lee (b. 1912), Carilla (1913), Josephine (1916), Mack Jr. (1918), and Lizzie (1925).⁵⁴

Tommie Cadlett died on 26 September 1916 at just 11 years old, from an asthma attack. He was buried in an unnamed cemetery in Four Oaks, NC.⁵⁵

Profus Cadlett was born on May 1st, 1909, just a few months before his grandmother, Mary Cadlett, passed away. He went on to marry a woman named Lizzie Dixon.⁵⁶ During his life, he worked for Dixie Awning & Shade Company, and as a waiter in a restaurant.⁵⁷ At the time of his death, his family resided at 315 Wake Place in Durham. He died on 15 October 1970 at 61 years old, due to complications from hypertensive cardiovascular disease. He was buried on 19 October 1970 at Glennview Memorial Park Cemetery in Durham.⁵⁸ Profus and Lizzie had at least four children: Betty, Profus Jr., Annie, and Paul.⁵⁹

There are so many Mary Cadletts in the family tree that it’s nearly impossible to keep them straight. We lost track of Mary Lee after the 1930 Census.

Carilla was born in 1913, her name shown as “Kara” in the 1920 Census.⁶⁰ On 24 August 1938, she married Robert Long, owner of Long’s Florist. Her name on the marriage certificate is “Cora Carrilla Cadlett.”⁶¹ The 1950 Census shows them both working at the shop. No children are listed.⁶² Robert died on 20 March 1985, and Carilla lived on until 22 March 1994.⁶³

Josephine was born around 1916.⁶⁴ The 1938 Durham City Directory shows her living at 505 Dowd with mother Lillie and siblings Carrilla, Mary, and Profus.⁶⁵ On 5 January 1945, she married James H. Knuckles, the son of Henry and Rosa Knuckles of Durham.⁶⁶ As early as the 1949 City Directory, she is the only resident shown at 705A Drew, suggesting that she and Henry were no longer living together.⁶⁷ She died a widow on 26 April 1999, her profession listed as school crossing guard.⁶⁸ Her obituary lists no children.⁶⁹

Not much is known about Mary Cadlett’s grandson Mack Cadlett Jr., son of Mack and Lillie Cadlett. He was born on 29 October 1918, and as of 1940, he was imprisoned in Rikers Island Penitentiary in New York.⁷⁰ Lafayette Allen, son of prosperous Durham builder Richmond M. Allen, was also incarcerated on Rikers Island at the same time. Were Mack Jr. and Lafayette involved in some criminal activity together? We don’t know.

Lizzie Cadlett, daughter of Mack and Lillie, was stillborn on 31 August 1925 in Durham.⁷¹

Archibald Catlett and his descendants

Arch was born in 1878 in Franklinton.⁷² By the 1900 census, he was living with his brother Dudley and Dudley’s wife and children. Like them, he supported himself with farm work.⁷³ By 1910 Arch (33) was newly married to Gracie Allar (28), with three children: Adline (10), Edward (6), and Guylar (2, later known as Garland).⁷⁴ We don’t know who the parents of the children are.

By 29 June 1917, Arch had remarried. His wife’s maiden name was Victoria Harris (daughter of Lutker and Haret Harris), and their 10-month-old daughter, Ruth, had just died.⁷⁵ In 1920, Arch (now “Archie”) and Victoria were living with their four surviving children: Edward (15), Garland (10), Irie (7, actually Ira), and Jessie (4).⁷⁶ Arch died on 4 June 1928 in Panther Branch, Wake, North Carolina, still married to Victoria.⁷⁷ Victoria remarried soon after (20 December 1928) to Robert Powell.⁷⁸

Irie, actual name Ira, was born 1 March 1918 and died 12 June 1955 in Norfolk VA. He was a general laborer and was married, though we don’t know his wife’s name. The informant on his death certificate was Lillie Mae Partin, who may have been the daughter of Dudley and Anna Catlett.⁷⁹

Frances Cadlett and her descendants

Frances was four months old when she was recorded in the 1880 Federal Census for Franklinton.⁸⁰ The next certain record of her is 50 years later, when she was living on Kelly Alley in Durham and working in a tobacco factory. Her age is given as 40, a not uncommon exaggeration for men and women in those days. Her marital status is listed as “married,” though no husband is shown; her age at first marriage was supposedly 32 (which would make that marriage in 1912). She appears to have shared a house with the Jack H. Rhoder family, whom we don’t know.⁸¹

Ten years later, Frances married Maucey (a.k.a. Mance, a.k.a. Maurice) Belvin on 29 May 1940. One of the witnesses at the wedding was E.W. Grissom (probably Edward Grissom, son of Cannon).⁸² On 16 February 1942, Frances was listed as the contact on Otha Belvin’s draft registration. Otha’s birthdate is 15 July 1921, and we assume Frances was his stepmother. Her address is given as 1307 Calvin Street in Durham.⁸³

The 1950 census shows “Maurice” and Frances Belvin farming in Carr township in the eastern portion of Durham Co. Living with them was Mary Waddell (27), niece, who was actually Frances’s much younger sister⁸⁴ This is another example of Catletts taking in relatives. In 1956, Frances was back in Durham, living with someone named Lee Wiley.

There is one other questionable sighting in 1902, where a Frances Catlett was working as a cook and living with a man named Nat Catlett. They are not shown to be married, but we know of no relations of hers named Nat. Our best guess is that this might be her brother Profus, whose middle initial was “N”, possibly for Nathanial.⁸⁵

Frances died on 25 January 1968 in Butner, Granville County.⁸⁶ We are still unable to determine the identity of her first husband, or whether she had children other than her stepson Otha.

Joe Catlett and his descendants

Mary and Louis’s son Joe was born on 24 October 1886 and died 25 January 1929. Unlike his siblings, Joe was born in Wake County. He died in Raeford in Hoke Country.⁸⁷

He married Leola Wortham (b. ~1891) around 1906 and in their 15 years together they had 14 surviving children and lost at least one other in infancy.⁸⁸ Other than one year (1920) when the census listed him as a barber, Joe seems to have worked as a farmer all his life.⁸⁹

Here’s what we know about Joe and Leola’s children.

Their oldest daughter, born around 1908, was Wanely. In the 1930 Federal Census for Raeford Township, NC, she is listed as “Wavery.”⁹⁰ She married Charlie Neill in the 1930s and lived with him in Raeford, where the 1940 Federal Census spells her name as Wavely. At the time of that census, Charlie and Wavely had taken in Wavely’s sister Josephine, as well as her younger sister, Hazel (11), and Edward (son of Dudley) and Pauline Catlett’s daughter Bernice (8).⁹¹

Next came twins, Eola and Gabe, in February 1909.⁹² Gabe was also known as Jogaeild or Jagoul—see Calvin and Maria Grissom’s son Jagoole.⁹³ In 1940, he is 29, going by the nickname “Buddy,” and living in Raeford Township with a wife, Mary (24) and two sons, Tommy (9), and David L. (7). Living with them (and confirming his identity) is his 16-year-old sister “Prepra.”⁹⁴

Eola moved to Durham and was a tobacco worker there in 1934. At that time, she lived at 1207 Drew along with her brother James and an “Alf” Cadlett that we don’t know. Also in Durham at this time is Eola’s brother Mack, Mack’s wife Lillie, sister Mary L., and brother Profus, all at 505 Dowd, along with someone named Corinna Cadlett, whom we don’t know. All of them were tobacco workers except Mary L. and Corinna, domestics, and Profus, who worked for an awning company.⁹⁵

Josephine was born in 1911.⁹⁶ On 20 January 1934 she married Sol Williams of Durham, another tobacco worker. For some reason the original marriage license had the name Kelly instead of Catlett. In a later version, Kelly was x-ed out by typewriter and replaced with Catlett in all cases.⁹⁷ It was a short marriage. By 1936 Josephine was living with her family under her maiden name, and the 1940 census shows her as widowed.⁹⁸ For some reason Josephine, with younger sisters Hazel and Bernice, were living with their oldest sister, Wavely, at the time of the census.⁹⁹ However, Durham City Directories show Josephine living continuously in Durham during this period—at 505 Dowd from 1936–38 and at 407 Canal from 1939–41. The 1941 directory even includes Bernice, who would then have been 19.¹⁰⁰ This is the last we see of Josephine, except for one possible sighting: The 1950 Federal Census shows a Josephine Williams in the NC Sanatorium, McCain NC, tubercular ward.¹⁰¹ She is the right age, though the record says she was “never married”—odd if this is the same Josephine Catlett under her married name.

Gladys M. was born on 15 December 1913 and died 13 February 1998. She married twice, first to someone with the last name Lee, second to someone named Horton.¹⁰² We don’t know of any children from either marriage. As of 1988, Gladys and her sisters Hazel and Bernice were all living in Brooklyn.¹⁰³

James L. was born in January 1916.¹⁰⁴ His name was shared by a number of people in North Carolina, making a positive identification difficult. We know for certain that he married Bertha Perry on 20 July 1935 in Durham. Witnesses include his younger sister Rachel.¹⁰⁵ He was himself a witness at the marriage of his cousin Edward Grissom to Beulah M. Price on 17 October 1936.¹⁰⁶ James L. and Bertha appear frequently in the Durham City Directories from 1935 through 1954, but we have no information as to possible children.

Rachel Lee was born on 27 October 1917 in Hoke, and died on 2 April 2004 in Kinston.¹⁰⁷ She shows up at age 2 on the 1920 census and age 13 on the 1930 census for Raeford.¹⁰⁸ By 1940, it appears that she has married 39-year-old Charlie Williams of Stoney Creek township. She is claiming to only be 21 at this point (actually 23), so the four children in the 1940 census must belong to Charlie from a previous marriage. Those children are Viola (16), John D. (15?), Evara (11), and Charlie Jo (9). Oddly, Rachel is listed as having been born in South Carolina, contradicting previous census data.¹⁰⁹Rachel’s Social Security Applications and Claims index shows a name change to Rachel Lee Williams in 1947, and a change to Rachel L. Bynum in 2004, indicating a second marriage.¹¹⁰ In her brother Joe Jr’s obituary in 1988, she is mentioned as “Rechel Byrman” and said to be living in Kinston.¹¹¹ Her North Carolina Death Index says she was a widow when she died, so we assume she outlived both husbands.¹¹² We have no evidence that she had children of her own.

Mary A. was born in January 1920.¹¹³ By the 1930 census she is going by Alice, which we believe is her middle name.¹¹⁴ With so many other Marys in the family tree, it would have been a way for her to stand out. She married Hammett Downey on 25 October 1937 in Mecklenburg Co VA. He was 29, widowed, from Granville Co..¹¹⁵ Hammett’s draft registration from 16 February 1942 lists Alice as his wife and his employer as C. E. Upchurch. Interestingly, Upchurch was also the employer of Charlie Neils of Raeford, who registered on the same day.¹¹⁶ This fact implies that Charlie Neils is the same as Charlie Neill, husband of her older sister Wanely/ Wavery/ Wavely, and once again shows the closeness of this extended family. Another example is the marriage of Alice’s youngest sister, Bernice, who was only 15 when she married Willie Kelly on 25 November 1946. Alice stepped in to give her permission.¹¹⁷ By 1950, we find Hammett (51) and Alice K. (31) living with their four children: Shirley M. (9), Darlene (8), Hammett Jr. (7), and J. G. (4). Nephew Herman Greene, who is unknown to us, also lived with them on Sherron Rd (no number), in Oak Grove, Durham County.¹¹⁸ The 1970s were difficult years for Alice’s children. On 14 January 1973, Hammett Jr. died in a “shootout” at the West Side Pub on Chapel Hill Street.¹¹⁹ He’d been employed as a Pathology Lab assistant, and he left behind his wife, the former Mary S. Shepard, and their two children, Tina Marie and Hammett III.¹²⁰ Later that same year, on 6 November 1973, Hammett Jr.’s sister, Shirley M. Brown, lost her granddaughter, infant Curtis Lamont Downey, at age 7 months. Curtis’s mother was Annette Downey, who had at least one other child, Lavosha L.¹²¹ Then, on 15 April 1975, Darlene Downey Melvin—34-year-old sister of Shirley and of Hammett Jr.—was killed by her husband, Vernon Leroy Melvin¹²² Despite a history of abuse, Melvin pled guilty to a lesser charge of involuntary manslaughter and got off with a suspended sentence and probation.¹²³ Alice died on 30 January 2011, age 91, in Durham.¹²⁴

Joseph Cadlett, Jr., who generally went by “J. C.”, was born on 12 October 1922 in Raeford.¹²⁵ He registered for the draft on 30 June 1942, but there’s no record of his having served in World War II. He worked at this time for T. B. Upchurch, doubtless related to the C. E. Upchurch who employed his brothers-in-law Hammett Downey (Wavely’s husband) and Charlie Neill (Alice’s husband).¹²⁶ On 31 October 1945, J. C. married Sennie Keith in Durham, and they went on to have three sons: Andrew, who was born 8 February 1947 in Durham, moved to Philadelphia, and then Melbourne FL where he died on 5 June 2002; Billy Joe, who moved to Newark; and Samuel, who stayed in Raeford.¹²⁷ J. C. died a widower on 6 December 1988 in Durham, a retired Duke employee and a member of the Greater St. Paul Baptist Church.¹²⁸

Paprika was born in 1923, and makes an appearance in the 1930 US Census.¹²⁹ The next we hear of her, she was living with “Buddy” Cadlett (a.k.a. Jagoul, a.k.a. Gabe) in Raeford Township.¹³⁰ She eventually married James Peterkin, and their infant son Paul Peterkin died at the age of 1 month and 6 days in Raeford on 21 Dec 1955.¹³¹ An undated Social Security claim for “Preppra Annie Peterkin” gives her birthday as 31 Jan 1923 in Raeford, and her death date as 27 Feb 1991.¹³²

Ruth was born prematurely on 21 November 1925 and died three days later. On her death certificate, her name was originally given as Jagoul (same as her older brother), then crossed out and “Ruth” was written above it.¹³³

Hazel was born in 1927.¹³⁴ She married Jasper Reed on 25 January 1946 in Durham. Her sisters Rachel and Alice were witnesses.¹³⁵ In 1988 Hazel was living in Brooklyn, as were her sisters Gladys and Bernice.¹³⁶ By 9 October 2020, however, she was back in North Carolina. She died on that date in Pinehurst.¹³⁷

Lula was born in October 1929, nine months after her father’s death on 25 January 1929.¹³⁸ We can find no further mention of her.

Bernice is a most interesting case, as her records indicate that she was born at least two years after her father’s death. Her age is calculated from a 25 November 1946 marriage license that shows Bernice, age 15, marrying Willie Kelly, 19, both of Durham. Because of Bernice’s age, her older sister Alice Downey gave consent.¹³⁹ Bernice was almost certainly named after her cousin, the daughter of Edward Coy Catlett and Pauline Mayo (Edward was the son of Dudley Catlett). This first Bernice Catlett was born in 1921, and lived for a while in Durham in the 1940s with her mother, Pauline. The last we see of Bernice Kelly (or Kelley), she is living with her sisters Gladys and Hazel in Brooklyn.¹⁴⁰

Mary Cadlett Grissom and her descendants

Mary Cadlett’s daughter, Mary Cadlett Grissom, was born on 15 April 1890 in Granville County, NC.¹⁴¹ In July of 1910, she married Cannon Grissom, who was 35 at the time. His parents were Cherry and Nancy Grissom.¹⁴² At the time of her death on 22 May 1946, she had been residing at 1404 N. Alston Ave, Durham, NC.¹⁴³

Throughout her life, Mary Grissom was a tobacco worker. Female black tobacco workers were an integral part of the tobacco industry in Durham, where far more black women were employed than white women. Durham employed more black women as tobacco workers than other tobacco hubs at the time, such as Petersburg or Richmond. Black women tobacco workers were able to foster a sense of community and strength, and potentially feminism.¹⁴⁴

Cannon Grissom was previously married to Caroline in 1893. They had one son, Moses, born in 1895.¹⁴⁵ In 1909, shortly before his marriage to Mary, Cannon shared a house at 1115 North Roxboro with someone named Edith Grissom.¹⁴⁶ Edith was the widow of Horace Grissom, who was probably related to Cannon, though we don’t know how.¹⁴⁷ Edith was the mother of Bessie Grissom, who, in 1931 bought a lot on Albright Street from Mack and Lillie Cadlett.¹⁴⁸ This is just one more example of the closeness between the two families.

Mary and Cannon Grissom had six children of their own: Katherine (1914–2006), Edward Coy (1917–1974), Mary a.k.a. Jettie (1919–1954), Ruth (1922–?), Thelma (1924–1925), and Naomi (1925–?).¹⁴⁹ Cannon owned the house at 610 Gray Street in Durham where members of the family lived continuously from 1919 until 1939.¹⁵⁰

Cannon died in Wayne County on 25 June 1937.¹⁵¹

Mary Cadlett Grissom died at Lincoln Hospital in Durham County on May 22, 1946. Her cause of death is listed as “coronary occlusion” attributed to “atherosclerosis”. She was widowed at the time of her death, so it seems unlikely that she remarried after Cannon’s death. She was buried at Beechwood Cemetery in Durham.¹⁵² After her death, the family that had occupied 610 Gray for so many years seems to have dispersed.

Katherine (sometimes Catherine) Grissom, one of Mary Cadett’s granddaughters and Mary Grissom’s daughters, was born about 1914. She married Frank Page at the age of 23 on December 15 1936. Edward Grissom, Katherine’s brother, was their witness. Katherine Page died 26 April 2006.

Edward, like his cousin Edward Catlett (the son of Dudley and Anna Catlett), was obviously named after Edward Coy, whose Arkansas lynching in 1892 made national headlines.¹⁵³ He married Beulah M. Price on 17 October 1936, but the 1938 Durham City Directory doesn’t mention her.¹⁵⁴ Instead it shows him living at 610 Gray with the newly widowed Mary Grissom (his mother) and his sister Ruth.¹⁵⁵ His youngest sister Naiomi was probably living there as well, but was too young to be listed. On the 1940 Census, Edward is confirmed as a widower, though he may only have been separated, and Naomi (now 15) is also shown. Three grandchildren are listed: Mary Elizabeth (7), Johnnie Mae (6), and Maggie Thomas Grissom (3). We don’t know whose children they are, but it is unlikely that any of them are Edward’s.¹⁵⁶ Edward served in World War II, and his documents show him as separated from his wife and with no dependents. Edward died on 12 February 1974.

Jettie, whose given name was Mary, was born in 1919.¹⁵⁷ She married James Waddell on 22 October 1934.¹⁵⁸ They lived in the Grissom family compound at 610 Gray for a while, but soon moved on.¹⁵⁹ At some point Jettie separated from James. In the 1950 Census for Carr township (Durham County), Jettie—as “Mary Waddell”—shows up living with her sister Frances and Frances’s husband, Maurice Belvin.¹⁶⁰ At the same time in New York City, a James Waddell from North Carolina is listed on the 1950 Census at the correct age, but married to a woman named Clara.¹⁶¹ Mary’s last years were difficult. She died on 23 January 1954 in Durham of exposure (possibly from being homeless) and acute alcoholism.¹⁶²

Ruth was born on 8 July 1921 or 1922.¹⁶³ She married John Early Neal on 21 August 1941 in Gorman. Her brother Edward (Ed) was a witness.¹⁶⁴ She died in Durham on 27 December 2004.¹⁶⁵

Naomi was born on 3 September 1922 and died on 15 March 2008.¹⁶⁶ She married Joseph Daniel (or Daniels) on 1 April 1946. Typically, with this close-knit family, three of her married sisters—Catherine Page, Ruth Neal, and Mary Waddell—were witnesses at the wedding.¹⁶⁷ Joseph had one child, Nathaniel (b. 1943), before his marriage to Naomi, mother unknown. Together they had four more: Joseph Jr. (b. September 1949), Barry Lamont (1 April 1953–2019), Pamela Marietta (b. 1956), and an unnamed male child who is still living.¹⁶⁸ Pamela married William Lee Walker on 2 December 1977.¹⁶⁹

Thelma died at age 1 year, 2 months, on 30 June 1925. At the time of Thelma’s death, she and her parents resided at 610 Gray Street. Thelma was buried at Violet Park Cemetery on 1 July 1925.¹⁷⁰ Violet Park Cemetery was lost in 1996 after being paved over to become a parking lot for St. Titus Episcopal Church.¹⁷¹
