The last few years of Durham City Directories, ending in 1963, show Mary T. Armstead still living in the family home, with Ruby living there at least as late as 1962. We may never know the exact date that Mary moved to Cana Street. In any case, the story ends as too many Durham stories do, with the bulldozing of the family house in the Hayti neighborhood to make way for the Durham Freeway. In early 1967, the family home was acquired by the Redevelopment Commission of the City of Durham under the power of eminent domain and eventually demolished.33Durham County Register of Deeds: Self Service Web.
