Corinne: 1870 US Census White Oak.

Carinna: 1910 US Census Durham 0039.
We see the first evidence of the young couple’s life together in the 1870 Federal Census. They resided at 272 White Oak in Wake County NC. Elam drove a lumber wagon, and the pair welcomed their first child, Emma, into their home within the previous year.41870 US Census White Oak. By the 1880 census, daughters Cinthia (9), Mary (7), Bettie (4), and son Orrin (1) joined the family. White Oak was now the Village of Cary, and Elam was working as a farm hand while Corinna was keeping house.51880 US Census Cary: “United States Census, 1880,” database with images, FamilySearch (https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MCXT-1QZ : 14 January 2022), Elam Hanna, Cary, Wake, North Carolina, United States; citing enumeration district , sheet , NARA microfilm publication T9 (Washington, D.C.: National Archives and Records Administration, n.d.), FHL microfilm: accessed 7 Aug 2022.

By the 1900 census, their home in the Village of Cary was annexed into Durham Township, and it was brimming with family. They now had a daughter Hortense (15), and sons Willie (13), Eddie (7), and Louis (6). Their daughter Emma, her husband Charlie Brandon, and their children, Freddie (8) and Bertha (4), also lived in the home. To support this large brood, Elam worked as a Drayman, Corinna worked as a cook, Emma strung sacks for tobacco, and Charlie was a fire station engineer.61900 US Census Durham 0026.

As the family expanded, so did the geographical boundaries of where they chose to live. While all documents appear to indicate that Elam and Corinna remained married to one another until death separated them, Elam remained in Durham while Corinna traveled to the homes of their children. Corinna’s journey began in the home of her daughter Hortense.

The 1910 Federal Census for Durham shows Hortense as single, with two children, both bearing her last name.71910 US Census Durham 0039. She went on to marry a longshoreman named Jimmie Ford in Norfolk VA, where her children George and Ruth were part of the household. Corinna also lived with them, as did Hortense’s brother Eddie.8Federal Census Year 1920: Census Place: Norfolk Jefferson Ward, Norfolk (Independent City), Virginia; Roll: T625_1901; Page: 10B; Enumeration District: 71. https://www.ancestry.com/discoveryui-content/view/101051382:6061?tid=&pid=&queryId=4a7a3ac9f5b4ba074980cafe8d0d68ca&_phsrc=tyO2444&_phstart=successSource: accessed 27 Aug 2022.
