Ratification Day
The Friends of Geer Cemetery is hosting a program to celebrate the 158th anniversary of the N.C. General Assembly’s ratification of the 13th Amendment, which abolished slavery. This program will be held at Geer Cemetery at 800 Colonial Street in Durham on Saturday, December 9. The program begins at 11:00 am. Please dress appropriately and wear closed-toe shoes.
Mr. Eddie Davis (former Durham City Council member) will present remarks about the occasion. And the libation ceremony will be led by Mr. Michael Williams.
After the short program, we invite you to place a flower near the grave of an African American who was alive in 1865, when the amendment was ratified.
