Restoration Awareness Ceremony 2024
Geer Cemetery is an historic African American cemetery in Durham established about 1877. Friends of Geer Cemetery is a volunteer organization that works to reclaim, restore, and respect this sacred ground.
Join us on June 8th as a day of restoration and reverence. Learn the history of the cemetery, the progress and work of Friends of Geer Cemetery, and the stories of the ancestors laid to rest in Geer Cemetery, including:
· Joe Cain (1891–1911)
· Candis Allen (1846–1915)
· Bessie Cain (1886–1903)
· Edna Meeks (1852-1919)
Researchers will share the stories of these four people, and Ron Bartholomew will demonstrate headstone restoration. Attendees can participate in an ancestral reverence libation ceremony led by Dr. E. Victor Maafo and accompanied by drummer Tave.
